FG Pledges To Establish Small Hydro-Power Dams For Rural Electrification



Federal Government has pledged to establish hydro-power dams for rural electrification as part of measures to address the energy needs and boost power supply in the country.

Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, Minister of Science and Technology, revealed this at the weekend when he received a delegation of the Senate Committee on Science and Technology who visited the Ministry on oversight visit.

Onu said already the projects and transformers have already been designed indegenously by the ministry’s engineers for the hydro-power dams.

He said two dams – Oyan Dam and Ikere Gorge Dam  were selected for the pilot projects while the Ministry was making concerted efforts to improve and expand the scope to cover other parts of the Country,

The minister also briefed the Committee on the 774 Young Scientists Award of the ministry, adding that the programme was initiated to encourage young Nigerians to embrace science subjects as a way of promoting science, technology and innovation in the Country.

The 774 Young Scientists Award which he explained was competitive, based on merit and transparent afforded opportunity for every local government area in Nigeria to participate.

Onu further assured that the Ministry would continue to improve on the programme and ensure active participation of all and sundry.

Earlier, Prof. Robert Borrofice , Chairman of the Senate Committee on Science and Technology, said  the Committee was at the headquarters of the ministry to find out what the Ministry had done with 2018 budget appropriation as well as its progress on the 2019 budget proposal.

Boroffice said the Committee would visit project sites to ensure everything was done in line with the spirit of transparency and the fiscal responsibility.

He further urged the minister to furnish and fully update the Committee on its cluster village technology project, waste – to – wealth Programme as well as renewable energy programme.
