Governor Aminu Bello Masari’s Chief of Staff, Bello Mandiya, has won the All Progressives Congress (APC) Katsina South Senatorial primaries for the 2019 general elections.
At the conclusion of the elections on Thursday at Funtua, Mandiya polled 1,469 votes to beat five other contestants.
With this development, Mandiya is expected to contest the seat with his opponent from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) from the zone, Shehu Inuwa Imam, who had earlier secured his party’s ticket unopposed.
For the Katsina APC Central Senatorial zone, a former Managing Director of Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, Kabiru Abdullahi Barkiya, also on Thursday emerged winner at the conclusion of the primaries having polled 1,466 to beat the incumbent Senator, Ibrahim Umar Kurfi, who came third with 141 votes.
A one-time Senator from the zone, Ibrahim Idah, also lost his bid to return to the Senate, taking second position with 897 votes. Barkiya will contest the seat for the zone with a former member of the House of Representatives, Hamisu Gambo, of the PDP who emerged as a consensus candidate for his party.
The incumbent Senator for Katsina APC Northern Senatorial zone, Usman Babba Kaita, beat three other aspirants during the party’s primaries at Daura to secure the ticket and he is expected to slug it out at the polls with his counterpart from the PDP, Usman Mani Nasarawa, who polled 875 votes to defeat two other contestants at the PDP primaries.
